The causes

A cause is an organisation Give can route creator fees to. There are two kinds, and the directory page shows which is which.

Directory causes

Most causes come from Give's curated directory: well-known charities and good causes, each identified by the X account its own website links. That account is the key to everything: the vault is derived from the handle, and the only way to bind a payout wallet to it is to sign in with that account.

A charity in the directory has agreed to nothing in advance. It does not have to. Fees accrue in a vault nobody holds a key to until the organisation claims them.

How an entry gets in:

1. It is on Give's list of good causes — humanitarian, health, children, hunger, water, environment, animals, human rights, disaster, disability, education, and more, worldwide.
2. Its X handle is read off its own website, never typed from memory, and then checked against X's own profile page for that account. A handle one character off would route money to a stranger, so an entry whose website does not link an X account is listed but not launchable, and an entry the two sources disagree about is held for a person to look at.
3. Verifications are re-checked yearly. A lapsed one is not current: no new coin can name the cause until it is renewed.

Registry causes

A smaller number of causes are reviewed by hand: registration confirmed against the public register, a payout address the organisation itself publishes and controls. These carry a signed, append-only history — who changed what, when, and which reviewer keys signed — and a published digest so a reader can tell whether history was appended to or rewritten.

What a cause is, and is not

A cause on Give is a payee, identified the way an invoice names one: legal name, jurisdiction, registration where known, and its own public accounts. It is not a partner, has not endorsed any coin, and its logo does not appear anywhere on Give.

Any organisation can ask to be removed. Removal is one signed event and takes effect immediately for new launches. Fees already earned by coins that named it remain claimable by it.

Nominating

Nomination is open; designation is not. Anyone can nominate a charity that is missing. A nomination is a name in a queue until it is added to the directory and verified.
